We have a proven track record for supporting students from a diverse range of learning needs and styles. Learning online is particularly beneficial for students with a diagnosis of Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) because students quickly appreciate that their sensory overwhelm is reduced and that they have more control over their learning environment, while having the flexibility to accommodate individual processing speeds and communication styles.

🧩 Personalised Learning Environment

Our online learning platform ensures that our school can tailor curricula to individual learning styles, allowing students to progress at their own pace, take breaks when needed, and revisit material without the pressure or time constraints that might cause anxiety. All our lessons are recorded for ease of reference, allowing students to review and reinforce lesson material at any time.

🎧 Reducing Sensory Overload

Online teaching also benefits students with an ASD diagnosis because we recognise that traditional schools have many sensory triggers that can be overwhelming. For example, students no longer have to negotiate loud hallways, fluorescent lighting, crowded spaces, and unexpected social demands. They can also make immediate adjustments like volume control, screen brightness, and background choices to create a focused space.

💬 Supporting Communication and Social Interaction

All students who learn at Sophia have access to a wide range of communication and social support. Online teaching ensures that alternative communication methods, like text-based material, support students who may feel overwhelmed in traditional classrooms. The chat function and structured breakout rooms can also be used to support minimally speaking or nonverbal autistic students, providing a medium where interactions are often less overwhelming than traditional classroom settings. This allows students to fully engage in academic discourse by focusing solely on the content, rather than the non-verbal social cues associated with face-to-face conversations.

🛠️ Teacher Training and Accessibility Tools

All teachers at Sophia High receive extensive training and support in the use of digital tools and how to apply them to provide necessary accommodations for students with additional learning needs. We are adept at utilising different presentation styles, providing explicit instruction, and using evidence-based strategies like visual supports and structured routines. We also utilise technology and accessibility tools such as screen readers, captioning, adjustable fonts, and organised, uncluttered interfaces that reduce cognitive load.

🤝 Building Connection and Reducing Social Pressure

We recognise that online learning poses challenges with in-person socialisation aspects that are easily supported in a traditional school environment. However, our small, intentional class sizes help students make connections with classmates naturally. Furthermore, online interaction provides the option for students to ‘mask’ less, as the interaction is less intense and less sustained, offering a level of comfort and security not found in a crowded room. We also recognise that a reduced in-person socialisation is sometimes preferable for students, along with the comfort of learning in their reliable home environments. All our lessons are taught by subject specialists, which ensures that students aren’t just passively consuming content. We always strive to meet students where they are in their learning journey. All students regularly use digital notebooks on Canva and chat functions in the classroom every lesson. This ensures that connections are made throughout the school day.

📆 Individualised Support and Review

We strive to meet the needs of all students by providing them with a clear induction process and individualised timetables, which are created with the student and their families in mind. Regular review meetings are scheduled, and progress is monitored and discussed in weekly/bi-weekly meetings with either the form tutor or a member of the Additional Learning Needs (ALN) team.

Online learning can transform education for children with autism.
